Cheery Sunflowers

This past spring I planted some more sunflowers. It’s my second year of growing them. 🙂

The one plant that thrived this year was actually self-planted from last year! It got quite tall and has put off some beautiful blooms.

The bumble bees and Gold Finches have really been enjoying them too.

Lunar Eclipse

We all enjoyed watching last night’s supermoon and lunar eclipse! I had a lot of fun taking pictures too 🙂 It was the first time I had ever tried to take pictures of the moon, so they aren’t the best quality. (Sorry that the moon keeps bouncing around in the eclipse photos)

(The last three pictures are from this morning, as the moon set over the treetops.)

General and I were the last of the family to go to bed. We sat out on the deck watching the stars disappear from the sky as the earth’s shadow drifted off the moon. It was a wonderful experience!

Homegrown Watermelon

We picked a watermelon from our garden earlier this week 🙂 We couldn’t wait to cut it open, since it was our first homegrown watermelon of the year! It was a little under ripe, but, oh, it was so good. We are already making room in our garden plan for more watermelon plants next year 😀

Splitting Wood

Yesterday, after a late breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and zucchini bread, Dad and Nathaniel went outside to start splitting wood. There were six rows of firewood, most of which came from the maple tree that used to stand in this very spot. The wood was ready for splitting, since it had been drying all summer.

When I went down to help, they had already split and stacked three ranger loads. I think altogether we did six loads 🙂

We neatly stacked the firewood on pallets up by the shed.  I like stacking the wood, at least I think it is more fun than splitting it!

Gabrielle got these pictures of Dad and Nathaniel splitting a large log. It was probably the stump of a tree, now it is firewood that will be used to keep a house warm, or to build a campfire.

Autumn Lanterns

IMG_2985_fotor DSCN2083_fotor DSCN3016_fotor DSCN3017_fotor

Saturday evening, when we girls slept out in our gazebo, we lit three of Mom’s fall lanterns and set out there for a cozy light.  We put tea lights in each lantern, and they burned well into the night.

Moses, a little kitten that Mom and General found in the ditch on a morning walk last week, loves to sleep out in the gazebo with us:) That has made for some fond memories- one time I was dreaming I was eating apple pie, and I woke up and Moses was playing/biting my lips! Ugh. Another time I woke up because he was purring in my ear. Then I realized that he had crawled up unto my arms and curled up for a nap. He is so sweet!
